arizona-portrait-photographer-hannah-israelsen-photography-grandpa-1_webI’ve always enjoyed taking photos, but my real passion for photography started when my grandpa was dying of cancer.  I had a really close relationship with my grandpa, and it broke my heart to realize that my children would never get to meet the kind, wise, funny man I loved so much.  So with the time that was left, I set out to preserve all the memories of my grandpa that I possibly could.  Grandpa was not keen on having his picture taken though, so this often meant sneaking photos of him while he thought I was taking photos of something else or secretly recording him telling a story on my phone.

As it turned out, one of the sneaky photos I took in the last few weeks of my grandpa’s life caught him in a quiet moment and captured the essence of who he was and how I wanted to always remember him (it’s the photo you see on this page).  When it was displayed at Grandpa’s funeral, family members loved how the photo showed exactly who he was in his final season of life.  My passion for photography awoke when I realized that my camera and I had captured something that was a treasure my family and I would always cherish.  It wasn’t taken with a fancy camera, but this photo of my grandpa is the one that started it all.  Launching a photography business after being at a career crossroads felt scary and risky, but remembering my grandpa and knowing that he believed I could do whatever I put my mind to helped me follow that dream and always reminds me of why I do what I do.
