First Birthday Cake Smash | Gilbert Photographer
I used to roll my eyes at first birthday cake smash photo shoots but then my baby Rose turned one and you can bet I was snapping photos like a maniac while she destroyed her little cake, so I can understand why those are a thing now! I may be partial as her mother, but they were too good not to share, so I thought I’d share a little recap of her birthday!
When I thought about how we should celebrate Rose’s birthday, I didn’t want to throw an over-the-top fancy party, because I feel like it’s a little silly to throw an extravagant Pinterest style party when your child is at an age where they won’t even remember it! So I thought we should keep things simpler and try to plan a day that my little girl would enjoy. Currently Rose’s favorite activity is reading books–she never tires of turning the pages of her board books, and I read books to her often throughout our typical days at home together. It makes my heart so happy to see her so interested in books since I’ve loved reading for as long as I can remember! So I decided that books would be the theme of her birthday.
We started out the day at the library in Downtown Phoenix. They have the most amazing children’s section, with lots of fun toys and play areas for kids of different ages. Rose kept saying “Wow!” while she explored the new toys and board books there. We also took a few rides up and down the five story building in the glass elevator, and she really enjoyed that too. Once we came home, we Marco Polo’d our out of state families during Rose’s little party. I had baked a little cake in a ramekin for Rose’s smash cake, along with some cupcakes that I topped with pictures of characters from her favorite books. They say a picture can tell a thousand words, so I’ll let the pictures tell the story of how this little first birthday cake smash went down!
It’s hard to believe that a whole year has gone by since we welcomed this sweet girl into our family, and we are just so grateful for her. She makes us laugh every day and truly brings us an incredible amount of joy! I can’t believe how rapidly she’s transforming from a baby to a toddler, but even though those tiny newborn snuggles were more fleeting than I anticipated, I can’t say I’d turn back the clock because I so enjoy watching Rose grow into the little person she’s becoming.
